BACKGROUND
 
Department established in the early 1970s at the former Cape Technikon for the training of town planning technicians.
Offers the following programmes:
  • National Diploma (3 years full-time)
  • Bachelor of Technology (1 yr full-time & 2 yrs part-time)
  • Masters of of Technology (2 years full-time)

THE PLANNING CURRICULUM NEXUS
The department's planning curriculum is centred around four major elements: Space, Society, Theory and Practice. Where these four elements meet is where the focus areas are for respective programmes. All the department's programmes aims to address the said elements as adequately as possible.

SECOND YEAR

Planning Practice and Project Work: (42 weeks of Experiential Learning).
During the year of experiential training, the student must as far as practically possible, be exposed to the following work categories: Graphic Communication, Planning Surveys and Planning.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission requirements to the course are as follows:

— A National Diploma in Town and Regional Planning (or an equivalent qualification) with an average of 60% in the final year of the National Diploma.
— Two years’ appropriate industry-related experience will be recommended.

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The Master of Technology is a two year full-time course. The course is aimed to:

— equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct research in Town and Regional Planning, and
— contribute to knowledge production through the understanding, application and evaluation of existing and new knowledge.
۩ The research problem, it’s justification, process and outcome are reported in a thesis.
۩ This research-based qualification allows for more innovative interventions within the profession, and also opens up broader applications across disciplines.
